Sea Horse Engraving

Seahorse design intended to show a masked engraving process. Slate is often stained by mineral deposits within; orange is usually iron. A slate is selected with an even surface staining, the design outline is cut into the slate, the design is then masked and the background can then be ground in finer and finer grits revealing the darker slate beneath. Masking is removed and detail engraving is completed.
